http://www.handymanlandscaping.com

It seemed like the winter season would never end… but low and behold – we can look forward to rays of sunshine and warm days ahead in our beautifully landscaped spaces!

The bulbs are popping up and we encourage you to clean up your beds of all debris so that they can enjoy any flowers that are going to pop up. Cut back any perennials if you missed out doing it in the fall.

*Remember - Pruning of flowering trees and shrubs should wait until after they have leafed out and blooming is done. The flower buds already exist.

Below are 10 more helpful tips to assist you in preparing for the season ahead and the warm evenings enjoying your beautifully manicured outdoor space.

10 Tips to Prepare your Home for Spring Landscaping

Know your climate

1.) Understand your climate: Before you get too excited in the garden area or nursery of your local home improvement store, know the climate for your home. This includes your geographic location on the Earth, as well as the climate of your yard. Choose plants appropriate for how much sun, and shade different parts of your lawn receive during the day.

2.) Do your research beforehand: Similarly to a do it yourself project, plan out your strategy for your landscaping in advance. Are you going to break it up in phases? Hire a landscape professional to help you understand your space.

Contact us for guidance or questions, we are here to help.

general@handymanlandscaping.com

Know what local ‘pests’ are in your neighborhood

3.) Know what local ‘pests’ are in your neighborhood: While you may think that all of you have to plan for is sun and water for your landscaping, think again – pests such as wildlife, insects, and stray animals can wreak havoc on your landscaping. Plan in advance if you will need fencing, wire mesh, or possibly planting natural plantings can deter and ward off many local pests.

4.) Plant landscaping at the suggested time of year: While you may be excited to plant your fruit trees and flowering shrubs, many plants will thrive better for years to come if you plant them at the suggested times of year that horticulturists and gardeners suggest.

Ask us what times are best for the plantings you choose for your outdoor space, our knowledgable staff can assist you in choosing the right plants for your yard.

general@handymanlandscaping.com

Plan for growth

5.) Plan for growth: When choosing landscaping and sizes of plants, estimate how large the plants will grow in 6 weeks, 6 months, etc… If you plant too many small shrubs in front of your living room window, and then find out they are actually small trees, you may have to dig them up soon! Most plants will have height and growth requirements on the pots when purchased from your nursery. Pay attention to these, before you plant.

6.) Get inspired: For some, inspiration comes from looking at neighboring yards, traveling to other areas of your town to look at landscapin. While others seek inspiration from home and garden publications and satellite television do-it-yourself programs. Often times a stroll through your local home improvement gardening center or veiwing a Companys’ portfolio is all the inspiration to get you motivated.

Visit our gallery’s at : https://www.facebook.com/HandymanLandscaping/photos

Map out the area

7.) Map out the area: Once you know what type of plants you’d like at your home, map out, or stake out the area in which your plants will be planted. Estimate enough room for pedestrians walking around, as well as growth and future maintenance of your landscaping. Ensure walkways will have safe areas for footing, and tall plants will not obstruct view lines from inside your home.

8.) Plan for maintenance: Unlike a paint color in your home, once it’s up you’re done, landscaping requires maintenance and care. From pulling weeds, watering and pruning, to occasional replacement of dead plants, etc… Once again, plan what plants will suit your maintenance schedule. Consider hiring a professional gardener or lawn service to take care of your yard if necessary.

Low and high maintenance plants

9.) Low and high maintenance plants: The beauty of landscaping and gardening is there are plants for every lifestyle, as well as every taste! If your home has a rustic or desert aesthetic, ornamental grasses that grow wild may be more suitable for your home. While if you live in a tropical region, flowering plants and shrubs may be more suitable. Check with one of our trained professionals to see which ones suit you and your home.

10.) Contrast with your exterior home: Your landscaping should be an enhancement of your exterior home. Choose plants that compliment or contrast the colors in your home as well as the architectural time period of your home. A modern and minimalist home may enjoy a modern Zen-inspired landscape, while a Victorian home may have quaint gardens and flowering areas that are typical for the Victorian era. Plan your outdoor landscaping to be in harmony with your exteriors.

Landscaping your outdoor space is one of the joys of springtime. Use these 10 tips to help you plan out your space, and your expectations before you start. You will be surprised how much you will enjoy your landscaping once you have planned it in advance. Give us a call with any questions you may have, we are always here to help.

… well we dont know if “excited” is really the word – but enthusiastic! We love this season as it keeps us busy finishing off our fall projects, winterizing all of our plants and pushing snow out of the way for our favourite clients… oh and dont forget the best part… looking for the biggest, fullest, Christmas tree we can find (well we are landscapers… we might know the best places to look!) to drag up the driveway in hopes our families will remember us from our long days away, working to finish your masterpieces this past Summer Season.

It’s almost time to throw out the wilted pumpkins and get those Christmas lights up! Give us a call, we would love to set your home up like Clark Griswald’s without the headaches (cant promise your equivalent relative to Cousin Eddy wont show up though).
Some Helpful Tips for our readers. As always – we want you all to have the healthiest – greatest spaces. We have put together some information and tips that might assist you in readying your yard for the next wonderful season we are so lucky to experience!

• Plant spring-blooming bulbs such as tulips and daffodils. You can plant them any time from September through Mid November as a rule of thumb – as long as the ground can be easily worked.

• Be sure to rake your leaves and dispose of them, preferably in a compost heap. Failing to rake leaves can result in a dying or diseased lawn.

• Throw on those rubber boots and uproot any annual flowers or vegetables that have been damaged by frost. Dispose of these in the compost heap; if you suspect disease, throw them in the garbage.

• Put those garden shears you bought this spring (that are still in the package) in your excitement for the season to work – Cut back any perennials whose foliage has become unsightly, almost to the ground.

• Ask Grandma to come over to play Rummy and weed the garden. Fall action prevents weeds from getting a head start next spring, saving you work in the long run!

• Protect roses as needed.

• In our great part of the world our tempurates fall below minus 10 – and for that reason you should apply a winter mulch to perennials. Simply lay a lightweight organic mulch, such as shredded autumn leaves, pine needles or straw, over beds to protect plants from winter’s extremes. Avoid more compact mulches and whole leaves (which can mat), since they can suffocate plants.

• “Water In” evergreens and small trees and shrubs if the fall weather is especially dry. (Our Calgary team knows these rules by thumb!) Their foliage and stems need to be nice and plump to prevent damage from drying winds now through early spring.

Well it’s “Almost” (we use the “F” word lightly as we slowly creep into September) Fall. Spring has sprung and summer gave us warm sunny days spent in our yards, beautiful, fruitful gardens and new exciting features we added (Finally!). It seemed like spring was never going to arrive and then when it did, we were already in summer! Well… here we are, the leaves are turning brilliant browns, golden yellows and rusty oranges, and although it is lovely… it also makes us think about EVERYTHING we didn’t get to this summer! Maybe we wanted to build a deck, add a water feature, plant more shrubs… the landscaping we swore we would do last fall! Well the kids are back in school and now we have time to focus on all of our fall landscaping so we are excited when the snow starts melting next spring!

Fall is a great time to add color to a yard with trees from bright yellows to fiery reds. Some of the best choices are sugar maples, birch, ash ginkgo, redbud, beech, hickory, butternut, honey locust and the tulip tree just to name a few out there. Fall planted lawns, shrubs, perennials, and trees enjoy the warm soil and cooler air temperatures to establish a good foot hold in your landscape. They have an advantage over plants put in the ground in spring. Some of the nicest yards and landscapes in the neighbourhood during the spring are the yards where owners invested in August, September and October. After the fall season of establishment comes a period of rest and dormancy we call winter. By the time spring arrives and the plants or lawn “wake up” they are well established and familiar with their surroundings. By the time next summer arrives they are prepared for the stress that season can bring to the landscape.

Here are some yard rejuvenation or renovation ideas for fall!

Add some mums, sedum, asters and ornamental grasses for color and interest now. These perennials among others can provide instant interest now and establish themselves for future years of enjoyment. Perennials can be used in containers where the spring planted annuals have faded. Grasses are perfect for this purpose. In November simply remove the perennials from your containers and sink them in the ground to protect the roots for winter then reuse them again next year!

Add some pansies and other cool weather tolerant annuals like ornamental kale. Pansies are perfect because they’ll add bright color to your fall landscape and will over-winter under the snow to provide beauty next March, April and May!

Add a tree or flowering shrubs. Many trees and shrubs are at their best in the fall season for providing color. In addition, they appreciate a fall planting to establish themselves in your landscape and will reward you with years of enjoyment. Using a liquid plant starter fertilizer at the time of planting so they put their energy into root establishment into the warm soil. Many shrubs like Itea, Clethra and Viburnum put on a great fall color show! Trees like Maple, Ginkgo, and Dogwood paint the outdoors in color.

Evergreens are great for fall planting. Evergreens play an important role in the fall landscape providing backdrop and diversity from deciduous plant material. Evergreens provide cover and protection for wildlife like birds in the landscape. Evergreens also benefit from fall planting with little stress on the top portion of the plant and great benefit from the weather for root establishment.

Adding a light (1 inch) layer of mulch can provide some protection for plants for the winter season while providing some color and texture now to the fall landscape.

Adding spring flowering bulbs during September, October and November to your garden. From daffodils to tulips, hyacinths to alliums, crocus to anemones and so much more, these beauties are easy to grow and will gift you next spring with color! Plant to at least the recommended depth in a well drained soil with some bulb fertilizer and put them to bed for winter. Next spring your renovated landscape will burst into color. You can sit back next spring and enjoy your beautiful yard
